Since 2006, MV Sunbeam V, a 74-foot vessel, and its caring crew, Captain Mike Johnson, Engineer Storey King, Nurse Sharon Daley, Steward Jillian, and Island Outreach Director & Chaplain Douglas Cornman have provided a floating, winter oasis for The Island Reader's team. Once a year island editors gather on the Sunbeam for our editor-retreat, where we design a working cover and build a working draft of the artwork and written pieces we intend to anthologize. The Sunbeam and its crew are an extension of the process, expertise, and resources that make publishing The Island Reader possible. THEN and NOW
The inspiration of Pastor Rob Benson The Island Reader first took shape in 2006, a thin, black & white, saddle-stapled arts anthology that showcased island artists from four unbridged islands off the coast of Maine. Today The Island Reader showcases artists from sixteen Maine islands and has evolved into a beautifully produced perfect-bound publication that is unique in regard to its submissions and special to Maine's island communities.
